Planning a project

The HRA website has extensive advice, from protocol development and funding all the way through to publication strategies. If you are a student we highly recommend referring to their student project pages, as there are some additional requirements that apply to student research projects.

The NIHR website provides useful resources in relation to planning Portfolio projects, including preparing a protocol and relevant governance.

We strongly advise contacting NARSG early in your project planning to allow interested Ambulance Services to give input on project design and feasibility.

Approvals

All research projects in Ambulance Services, regardless of whether they involve patients, staff or data, require approval from the Research & Development (R&D) team(s) of participating Trusts. This is in addition to any national or international regulatory approvals.

In order to undertake research in the NHS in England or Wales you need to obtain Health Research Authority (HRA) and/or Health and Care Research Wales (HCRW) Approval. Separate approvals are necessary in Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can find further information on necessary approvals here.

Getting in touch

If you would like to involve a NARSG member Trust in your research, you should Contact NARSG or get in touch with the Trust’s Research team directly. Contact details for individual Trusts can be found on their page.
